This week in NYC, marked
3/16 - 3/24: A “beertini,” a new speakeasy in Grand Central, and how to celebrate St. Paddy’s (if you must)
Open for business
Spots on my radar that opened in the last two weeks – or are already accepting reservations.
Bodega Nights (opened 3/12): a Bushwick wine bar and restaurant from the Babysips team pairing natural wines with Iberian- and Brazilian-inspired dishes.
Highball Ltd. (opened 3/13): a new bar from Please Don’t Tell (PDT) at 10 Grand Central. You enter through a freight entrance, then ride up to a hidden, railcar-inspired speakeasy for highballs and bar snacks.
The Peek Inn (opened 3/14): a low-key hot dog and beer spot from the team behind The Meat Hook in Greenpoint. Allegedly serving a “beertini:” a beer served martini-style, with olives.
Seventy Seven Alley (opened 3/6): a restaurant from “Next Gen Chef” alum London Chase inside the Walker Hotel Tribeca, serving an eclectic menu focused on seafood and a wagyu chopped cheese.
This week in NYC
My favorite things to do between March 16 – March 24.
Fishwife x Edith’s Upside-Down Salmon Melt (3/16): The tinned seafood brand teamed up with Edith’s for a limited-run sandwich collaboration featuring their cult-favorite salmon.
GIANT previews on Broadway (previews this week, opening night 3/23): John Lithgow stars as Roald Dahl in the award winning play from London’s West End – previews are running now if you want to catch it before the buzz fully hits.
Christian Petroni x F&F Restaurant (3/17): A one-night “Parm to Table” collaboration bringing the “Chopped” winner’s Italian-American cooking to the Carroll Gardens spot for a special menu.
New Museum Grand Opening Weekend (3/21): The New Museum’s long-awaited expansion finally opens its doors, and New Yorkers get free admission all opening weekend. Reserve tickets in advance.
Lady Gaga’s The Mayhem Ball at MSG (3/19 & 3/20): If you have tickets, you already know. The two-night run promises exactly the theatrical, over-the-top spectacle you’d expect.
Low-key St. Paddy’s celebrations
Irish pubs, soda bread, music, and a few cozy traditions.
Mary O’s Irish Soda Bread (East Village): A tiny morning shop known for warm soda bread scones with Irish butter and homemade jam.
Fish & chips at Molly’s Shebeen (Gramercy): One of NYC’s most old-school Irish pubs with dark wood and a fireplace – where fish and chips feels especially right this week.
Irish drinks at The Dead Rabbit (FiDi): Perfect for a whiskey flight or their famous Irish coffee.
Browse Irish writers at McNally Jackson (multiple locations): Pick up something by my favorite Irish author Sally Rooney.
Trad music at 11th Street Bar (East Village): One of the city’s longest-running Irish music sessions with fiddles and pipes.
A Guinness at Swift Hibernian Lounge (NoHo): A beloved Irish pub with dark wood interiors and one of the better-poured pints.
In case you missed it
Other happenings to be aware of.
Expect the classic NYC March weather whiplash – highs in the 40s and 50s, with potential rain and lingering cold nights. A light jacket won’t cut it this week.
It’s a cozy week to work remotely from a cafe (here’s my guide on the best spots), or to dream about warmer weather to come (here’s my spring bucket list so you can start planning).
